Generation 3. Maxine Elliot Stewart (1902-2000).

Daughter of George Leon and Laura (Ambrose) Stewart; granddaughter of Joseph Ritner and Margaret (Dougherty) Ambrose. This picture is undated and has no photographer's mark.
Maxine was born in the house at 817 Main Street, Rural Valley. She attended elementary and high school in Rural Valley, then went to Indiana Normal School (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania) to obtain her teaching certificate. Maxine taught for a few years in Rural Valley, then taught in Creighton, PA for the rest of her career. Altogether, she taught elementary school for forty-six years. After retirement, she returned to Rural Valley and spent her time gardening and on church activities.Maxine was always a great reader and very interested in cultural affairs. She visited Europe twice, once in 1957 and again in 1974. She played the piano and organ, and for several years served as organist for the Rural Valley Presbyterian church.She is buried next to her parents in the Rural Valley Cemetery.
